Default Heater Valve?

I have a 1996 Volvo 940 LPT with AC. B230FK engine and auto.

While looking for the crank position sensor location I found my source of coolant loss!

Behind the distributer cap there is a valve and various pipework. Spotted a drip! and hose was wet!

does the low pressure turbo have the heater valve in the engine bay? Where is a good source of heater valves and rear hoses?

Many thanks. James.

I was looking last year and found what looks to be the same as the original Volvo valve. Apparently the same valve was used on the Holden Commodore and they are cheap in Australia: Linky

The postage isn't cheap but you could buy a few for a reasonable price (assuming they bundle postage) and be set for the life of the car.
The all-plastic copies only last a few years in my experience so these Holden oned should last longer.

As for the hoses, they are special Volvo items that were expensive when I replaced them some years ago. From memory one is U shaped and the other is J shaped. Not sure if you could get a silicone equivalent made.

Failure of these hoses and the valve was the reason I did the coolant level warning lamp mod.

The crucial point is that you have AC James - it's not related to whether you have a turbo or not. Almost any generic vacuum-closed heater valve with 16mm hose stubs will work so you have a lot to choose from!

It opens with prolonged lack of vacuum in other words when the engine is off - this is so when refilling the coolant you don't need to move the heater control to hot before refilling. Good practice to though as when you start the engine to bleed/burp the system, having it on hot helps the circulation of coolant.

Thanks as always.

Interesting on the non original valves not lasting long. In the engine bay is not a good location due to heat!

I'll hopefully get the car started, then replace valve, hoses and oil cooler pipes! An order from FRF looks on the cards soon! I bet the Volvo valve is original!

James
