No speakers...
I recently bought a 940SE estate from 1991 on an H plate. I found the radio code on a page in the handbook, input and the radio worked, but I was surprised that there was no sound from the door speakers. On closer inspection I found that there were no door speakers, just one on either side of the dash.
Was this common? Is wiring in the doors ready to connect if I were to buy a set of decent speakers? The car has stood up well to some obvious harsh treatment and I hope to improve it bit by bit. |

Chances are you won't have any speakers in the rear doors though so you might want to look at speakers in the back, I don't know if they're still available but Luke (360beast) had a set of D-pillar speakers in the D-pillar trims for sale recently.

Swap it!
I bit the bullet last year and put in a more modern head unit. On my '97 940.
Alongside the OEM radio cassette, the previous owner had installed a Parrot hands free, which was awful. I think it did Bluetooth for music as well as car phone, Chinese nonsense of the worst kind. I wanted DAB and good Bluetooth. Fitting was easy leads wise, but the facia plate I have is not right. The plate doesn't allow for the ISO cage, the cut out and body is too small, so the unit is just balanced for the time being in the opening. It looks ok, but I must get back to it at some time. The facia plate I have is: Autoleads FP-10-01 Volvo 940 90-96 Car Stereo Single Din Fascia Facia Panel. I put in a DAB and FM splitter lead, rather than fit a windscreen DAB. This is ok on FM and mainly OK on DAB, but DAB not good outside big towns. I went for a Pioneer DEH-X7800DAB, about £100 new. 4 x 25 watt rms. It does CD's as well, and I was interested in the rare option of stuff called time alignment. Which sounds a bit sci fi, but isn't. And, as said above, the difference is night and day. The old radio could be likened perhaps to a small valve radio, by comparison. Not much bottom end, and dull higher frequencies. Probably OK as a guitar practice amp! The new unit is just much more transparent through the range, and sounds more confident as a result, in spite of being similar power to the old unit. I put two small 'cuts' in the graphic equaliser, to take out 'boxiness' and 'sibilance' (possibly -3 db at 400 Hz and at 5k). And the time alignment stuff works, and improves matters. The display takes a bit of getting used to, trying different settings. I've gone for a fluorescent green. Not quite bright enough in sunlight. And face off face on business is a bit of a pain. The bluetooth works really well for spotify, calls, and internet radio from the phone. If I'm listening to something and turn off the ignition, it pauses the program on the phone, and picks up where I left off, on restarting the car. There is also a five minute pause button for the DAB. There is a full three way cross over available, for those who want external amps, or the left and right rear outputs can be switched to drive a two ohm sub. I should have done this swap a few years ago!
