That bit i totally agree on and to be fair, that's down to Bosch as they designed the L/LE and later Jetronic systems to be "add-on" units. As such, it was a reactive design from Volvo so probably unfair to blame them entirely.

I finished work a bit earlier than I thought so re-fitted the battery and same fault.

Had a look at the fuel pump relay and the solder joints look ok but who knows. Had 2 copper windings and nothing looked burnt/melted solder.

when sitting in the drivers seat I hear no pump buzzing/priming. I'll try listening with fuel flap open.

I tried connecting a wire to the battery positive to the white/red striped wire at the coil and no difference, unless no contact made or wrong side. Tried several times.

Next thing I'll try is seeing if there is voltage at the fuel pump. Need to clear the car out!

James.

Nope! Next thing is run the wire from battery +ve to coil +ve which is the BLUE wire!!! You'll also find if you look at the coil it has "+" and "-" on the top near the terminals!

Surely we have already estabished the coil 12V is fine because the rpm needle is moving?

In any case isn't it better to measure first?

Had a play with it.

I disconnected each HT lead in turn and fitted an old spark plug. Each one had a spark and each doing a zap zap noise.

Took a spark plug out and its dry and slight fuel smell. Suspect no fuel delivery?

Tomorrow will find fuel pump and check voltage. Is pump under back seat?

Going to order a fuel relay unless anyone has a known working unit.

What's your thoughts? Should I try the coil wire again or does it mean as the HT leads produce a spark ignition is probably ok?

Fixed my rear wash. Pipe had come off behind rear seat mounting trim. A fiddle dismantling and threading pipe through and back onto rigid black pipe.

James

What colour was the spark, orange or blue?

No, it's under the left hand cubby hole cover on the passenger side between the D pillar and wheelarch. There are three wires in it, one of which is pink and another is black. Pink is the +12V supply, black is earth - the other one is the fuel gauge signal.

If you have a test lamp, rig it up to test the pink and black wires, look over your shoulder so you can see the test lamp and turn the ignition on - the lamp should light for 1-2 seconds and go out but come back on if you turn the key to position 3 to crank the engine.

Spark, looked more white in the light. No test lamp I'm afraid!

Was it under a black metal plate secured by 4 bolts? to the side of the passenger wheel arch? Under the separate boot floor trim. Ie fixed part in far rear boot. If so saw fuel filler pipe and various hoses. Everything very dirty! Big jubilee clip securing something!

What you found there was nowhere near it! That was the fuel pump/sender unit!

The cubby hole is this one :

Should be a small loop to lift it up at the wheelarch end, if not, lift the flap over the spare wheel and lift the front end of the cubby hole cover near the wheelarch.
