Default XC90 2020 R design wheel size advise

I bought a 2020 XC90 T8 Recharge R Design a year ago from a Volvo Selekt dealership. It came with 22" alloys. We've been through three tyres already! We want to change the wheels to 20" ideally.

Volvo won't give us a clear answer as to why they will only approve one alloy in 21", apart from saying it's because of the weight (battery in the recharge and obviously size of car). They did also tell us the brakes are 19", which makes me want to know why we can't have 20"?

I don't really understand why out of their extensive list of alloys available they will only approve one for our car. This makes me feel too nervous to go outside of Volvo (who want to charge £3,400 for a set of four including tyres), even though every alloy company I've spoken to just say 20" is fine.

I confess to not being a 'car person' and so my general understanding of technical stuff is basic! Car is currently off road as we don't want to replace the 22" tyre!

Can anyone help me?

Feel for you. I cannot understand the ridiculous move to low profile tyres on none sports cars. I’ve had two punctures on my 19” wheels in the last six or so months so part of it is just the general state of the roads.

Have you tried asking Volvo what winter tyre & wheel sets they sell for your car? I only ask because if one of those options is 20” wheels then you have the answer you want. The alternative is to do the same on Volvo and aftermarket resellers websites in North America and Germany where winters can be harsher and people tend to shift over wheels and tyres.

I run full winter tyres up here in rural Scotland and am not suggesting you do this if you don’t wish to rather it is an interesting way of finding out if 20” wheels are actually approved.

I'm pretty sure that T8 Recharge models weren't introduced until 2021. If your car is from 2020 is it actually a T8 Twin Engine? Assuming it is, these are the approved wheel and tyre sizes for that model:

What’s the difference between a “twin engine” and a “recharge” out of curiosity?

Mostly a marketing thing but later on (from MY22 I think) the Recharge models got the larger battery and more powerful rear electric motor.

recharge 2024 has the same approved wheel and tyre sizes all the way down to 19"

Obviously having 22s you should have arch extension so you'll be lookin at wheels with a 38.5 offset, perhaps they are looking at wheels for cars without extensions hence the limits?

Volvo did not have many options with the right offset on the smaller size I was after, I just bought aftermarket ones, worked out cheaper by a large margin.

If you are looking for the 20" 5-Spoke Black Diamond Cut - Style 1094, I have 3 with delivery mileage and a matching tyre available.

Let me know and I’ll send you details.

Mine is a broadly similar car (although 4 years older).

It was delivered with 235/55/19 tyres on 6 spoke wheels. The 6 spoke 19s fit. The 10 spoke 19s don't as there is not enough internal clearance on the wheel. Off the top of my head the maximum gross weight of my car is 3010kg.

So. If your maximum weight is the same and provided the brakes were not upgraded to bigger disks between 2016 and 2020 then some nice 6 spoke 19s with cushy tyres should fit. Touch wood I have never had pothole damage to any of my tyres in 175k miles.

Hi there,

I have just read your post and wondered if you had things sorted with your 22'' wheels. If not, then perhaps we may be able to come to a deal to help both of us.

Hopefully the good info in the other responses here should put your mind at ease over the R Design wheel sizes, weight, arches and offset.

I have a 2017 XC90 R Design with the 20'' 5 spoke wheels and 4 new tyres fitted about 1000 miles ago. All 4 wheels are in good condition with only a couple of light scuffs on 2 of them.

I am looking for a set of 4 genuine Volvo 22'' wheels and was also hoping that ideally i would find someone who wanted to do a deal and swap. Just makes it so much easier than buy one set and then sell another set.

If you still have them and want to consider a deal then please let me know and we can sort out photos and and a deal etc.

Cheers
Steve
