Question coil packs prob really dumb question

Hiya, the car in garage, S60 T5, only had it two days and probs already. because of the erratic idle and then misfiring when starting hubby took it to garage and they diagnosed to start with a misfire in cylinder 1, then came up a misfire in about cylinders 1-5. mechanic said could possibly just be spark plugs if not that then coil pack. Have been on web to search for prices and was wondering when they quote £35 is that just for one and then gonna cost me £175 to sort or do they come in multiple packs like when you buy spark plugs they come in sets. see what I mean about really dumb question but any clarity of the matter would be appreciated.

They come as a single coil pack for one cylinder I'm afraid. I do remember reading somewhere on the web about the possibility of using Seat coil packs as they were the same but cheaper but I can't find it now. You'd want to be sure you need to replace them all before splashing out. Doesn't sound as though your mechanic knows what it really is. Could you change the plugs, see what happens and maybe then try for a better diagnosis if the problem is still there.

One final thought - was it from a dealer or trader....in which case they ought to sort it for you. If private then it's down to you I guess.
