Is that essentially a core plug?

Recommendation please for a suitable sealant for plug. I'm even considering epoxy as I can't see my needing to remove the plug again in my life time

Whatever you use, make sure that everything is 100% oil, grease and dirt free. As it's an oily area and not under pressure there should be no rust to worry about. For epoxy I would say JB Weld. A light coat on the seat and around the plug, a really good whack with a punch to the centre, Small socket or the ball of a ball peen hammer, and then fill in the outer lip area with the JB.

So, replaced camshaft plug and all OK until it started expelling oil big time.Engine out (getting to be an expert) plug still OK, but oil from rear bearing. Removed sump and seal carriers. Looks like you were right all along Kay. A drain in the carrier. Felt seals in wrong groove. Fortunately I have spare felt strips and gaskets. Will soak felt in tallow and replace correctly. Looks like sump gasket was weeping also at rear. In all probability the cam shaft plug was OK. All in a days work.

Thank you George
Good luck, you won't need to get the crankshaft out for this. Other brands are worse. Enjoy the season with your PVolvo Happy rolling, Kay |

I think I need to link this thread for future reference. Note to self: see post #8.
I'm not so clever jumping between different threads - especially a year or so from now. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=303278 |

So, engine out sorted and back in in two days, not bad for an oldie, single handed. When doing this job remember to tie up the exhaust pipe or it will be on wrong side of starter and a real PITA .When it's tied up the manifold studs will line up with a bit of help as you drop the engine in..Just need to finish it of tomorrow.

Back on the road again Seems to be running fine, won't really know until I take it for a long run. Just need to go over everything and tighten up.
