Default S40 D2 1.6 2013 reduced engine performance problems

Hi there, looking for some help.

When I drive the car, as soon I try to accelerate the car starts to shudder and stutter. Until I get the message 'reduced engine performance' that limits the car with very poor acceleration and can struggle to get over 40mph. It stays in limp mode until the engine has been turned off then the above process happens again.

I have put 2 cheap code readers on the car, I don't get any code at all. I have already changed the fuel filter and have added redex ect to the diesel. Still nothing.

I don't seem to be losing oil or water. I was thinking maybe a sensor or the egr? But you would think it would bring up a code?
The egr in this engine is more complicated than the older models.

Has anybody got any ideas? Very frustrated.

Kind regards, Charles.

Most likely you've got a wiring issue.

Check the connectors and wiring from the pedal sensor to the CEM.

It's worth pulling the CEM out as well and cleaning all the contacts and terminals - CEM wiring looms are troublesome on these cars, worth noting it's never the CEM causing the problems, always the connectors/wiring to it.

Also - It's a Volvo, they're fussy cars, a cheap OBD scanner won't help you much on these other than very basic codes if something obvious has gone wrong. You're better off buying, or finding someone, with a VIDA/DICE setup that can help. It's designed by Volvo and is what the main dealers use for talking to the cars.

Thanks for the reply. I did have a quick look at wiring from pedal, though I'll give that another try when I return from work.

It seems to be only when going over around 1500 revs.
Fingers crossed its that. It's very frustrating not getting any codes at all.

But one thing that is making me think it can't be that is the fact when the car is idling, you can Rev the car as normal and it reacts the way it should. Does the sensor work different when it's being driven?

Weirdly it starting playing up as soon as I fueled up. Was thinking maybe poor fuel. But it added redex and also added another 20ltr of high quality fuel.

I'll check the wiring and post back results.

First thing you need to get the proper codes read out and let them guide you . First thoughts are a faulty injector , Has the engine got the latest software updates, or has it been neglected ?

The car had regular services as it was a company car.
I'm not sure about the software updates.
If it is a faulty injector I assume it will need to be coded when being fitted? Can't just buy online and fit?

Was worried about it being injectors, as this would be a costly repair?

My car (2012, also D2 engine) went recently into the limp mode. Had two split air charge hoses (did not think it was even possible).

As with all car problems they have to be positively diagnosed first before following a repair procedure .. We can't guess, just guide :-)
yes there is software when installing new injectors

Had a look over all the hoses can't find any leaks.
Did you have the same symptoms as my car before limp mode?

Pulled out CEM. All clean, no signs of water ingress.
I'll need to order a code reader and take it from there.
