Well the software update didn't fix the problem unsurprisingly and I had limp mode again last weekend. Car went in again on Monday and just spoke to the dealer who said it needs 'Exhaust Recirculation Valve and Pipework' so I presume this is the proper fix. Hopefully getting parts in tomorrow.

In the meantime I've got a hire car from Volvo assist which is due back in just over an hour but dealer wants to put me in one of their cars to save costs, which is fine but they want me to drive 30mins to the dealership to swap them over - I was a bit surprised by the reaction when I said I couldn't just leave work for an hour and I'm now waiting to hear back if they'll be so kind as to drop the car off for me!

Paul.

I go through tyres as quickly as I go through EGR valves, I do not think the issue is down to driving style, what fuel you use, short runs-long runs and certainly not an economic driving style!

Certain countries are worst affected the UK and Thailand have pretty high failure rates, although most markets have had problems, and certain engines more than others, for example very few reported issues with the D2 D3 and D5 in the xc90

It has been brought up before on another forum, that perhaps it's down to the sequential turbo in the D4 causing the issue, where as the single turbo D2 and D3 have rare failures. Perhaps the twin turbos act as a heat sink affecting exhaust temperatures more?

Although this doesn't explain the lack of reports with XC90 owners...

The XC90 has a temperature controlled louver screen behind the grill that closes off the engine bay when the temperature is below optimum. Could that be the difference?

So my stress levels are starting to rise.....

Had my XC60 for 4 months now and last week the car went into limp mode. Same symptoms as everyone else on this thread as it turns out. Coolant level dropped and service reminder came on. Restarting the car took it out of limp mode.

Got it serviced from an independent Volvo specialist today who didn't initially encounter the problem, but then on the second test drive, the engine management light came on. Plugged into VIDA and fault code shows EGR issue.

The problem I have now is that the car is out of warranty by 10 months and because I will need software updates and have a Polestar map, I have to take it to a dealer to avoid the Polestar being wiped.

Does anyone know how much this issue will cost to get fixed and how long the wait will be if this is such a common problem and parts have to be ordered?

Will Volvo foot the bill for this as it is a common issue, as I have seen on a few threads?

I am so tempted to go onto the Audi website and start looking for a new car....

You say you have had the car 4 months. Did the car not come with any warranty from the dealer, or did you buy privately?

Regards

you won't have the New VEA engine , you have the 5 cylinder diesel don't you? You need to just deal with what ever problem you have , What is the fault code and what is wrong with the EGR Valve they are pretty reliable .

The car is a MY2012 bought privately. The Volvo warranty ran out last September apparently.

The indy Volvo tech said the fault code related to the flow of exhaust gases and a valve opening and closing. He cleared the fault and the drive home was ok. But I know the issue will return as it is starting to go into limp mode more often now.

Does anyone have any idea what it may be that is causing the limp mode and drop in coolant level if it isn't the EGR valve? DPF filter maybe?

Limp mode can be caused by a blocked DPF filter which your indie should be able to regenerate, the loss of coolant could be historic - but he needs to read all the codes to see what is being reported.

I would get the indie to regen the DPF, his code reader should be able to confirm the blockage and I would top up then monitor the coolant over the next few weeks
