Thanks for your help guys.

I will call Volvo this morning. Is it worth doing the coolant temp sensor and the thermostat whilst i'm there?

The emmisions light has also decided to introduce itself now - could this be becauise the engine is running a bit rich as it thinks its always cold?

Thanks
Joe

You should also notice the radiator cooling fan running for a couple of minutes when you shut the engine down, this is normal behaviour when the stat sticks open.

The ECU is looking for a rate of change in engine temperature, if the rate of change isn't as expected it puts the rad fan on cooling an already under temp engine even further, this is usually accompanied with the check engine light.

I wouldn't bother changing the temp sender unit though unless it's faulty and it doesn't sound like its broken to me - Mike
