Default Just aquired 850 CD T5

Just got a 96 CD 850 T5 as my venerable 940 is creaking and its awesome !

I expect i shal have many questions in the future, but a quick one, is there supposed to be illumination of the clock/computer panel at the bottom of the instrument panel or am I being thick? all other panel lights work fine

Yes there is lighting to the clock/computer panel at the bottom of the dash. Your bulbs have obviously blown and need replacing. See here http://www.volvospeed.com/Dashremove.php for details on how to do it.
