speedo' cable fixing

Hi, is this the correct way with the stop at the instrument end or should the stop be at the gearbox end?

Oh dear I've just come back from the workshop - I won't be able to check until tomorrow.

I've just looked through the pictures I took when I dismantled everything and can't see for sure.

I seem to remember there's a screw fixing over the cable for the back (well side for my horizontal gauge) of the speedometer. (But that might be a cross pollenated Mercedes memory!)

I can check tomorrow - but I hope someone else in the mean time can help.

I'm fairly sure there's just a bolt at the gearbox end that goes into a custom dent on the outer cable.

Thanks,just be careful if you pick it up that the inner doesn't slide out onto the floor. That's what happened to me and by the time I had cleaned off all the dust and grit i couldn't remember which way it had come out!

It looks as though the end with the shoulder fits into the gearbox drive. I tested it out on a spare speedo end drive. I will still wait for you to confirm. Lying on my back under a car is not my favorite place to be.

My inner drive (square) seems to be fixed in place - when pulled at the gauge end it doesn't want to move out of the conduit...

thanks. that confirms my opinion. The shoulder end into g box. Looks like you have a lot of cleaning up to do in that area. the drive shaft does indeed pull out. Just needs some "not so gentle" persuasion.You will need to separate the shaft to fit new top hat seal
