Got it just in time (this is how these racks die, water/humidity leaks inside the boot from poor clamps or torn boot, the rack rod surface starts to rust, the rust eats on the seals, the seals starts leaking - non replaceable = new rack).

Plus, a cable tie might expand/become brittle with the temperature, how can one be sure it seals properly in winter days when the boot is covered with ice or salt?

These boots are secured with oetiker clamps for a reason at the inner end and with spring clamps at the outer end, if I remember well, both are a very tight type of clamps.
yes the inner end is a crimped ring , it has to be tight to compress plastic , the plastic ones are more durable than rubber .

I used a cable tie over the inner boot seal on the rack as the boot clicks into place over a lip first so water ingress isn't possible if you use a strong, wide, quality cable tie.
Spring clamp only though on the boot outer as that is the only thing keeping moisture out.
4 years on and the inner is still bone dry and the rack performs as new.

The volvo dealer parts department , it is not straight forward you need a few additional parts to go with it depending on chassis number etc there are multiple supersessions , let the experts choose it for you who have the exact car details on hand !

Got one with my specific part number from ebay for £75, there were others with different part numbers for about £40. It cost £185 for my local garage to fit. I tried the Lucas PS Stop leak which didn't help, my leak was really heavy. Car came back with the clock needing to be reset and a low beam headlight bulb had blown, would the garage have needed to disconnect the battery?

They need to lower the rear of the subframe, support the engine, etc, I wouldn't be surprised there's more stuff to disconnect down there so yes, battery off would have been important. The £185 to have it replaced is a bargain for sure - did they also do the geometry?

If that's been done well, and aligned too then bargain of the year IMO. I can see me doing this job myself in the future too but might ask a couple of local places for a quote first in case I can save a day of lying upside down swearing..
