Ive had a 105/102bhp one for 7.5 years, on 127k clean as a whistle. Had a 120bhp one until recently on 143k, drawing a fair amount of oil through induction but still clean at the tailpipe. Ive not noted any smokey ones around...
Sounds on the face of it like burning oil from turbo/crappy injectors/both, but before condemming those, start with basics, is air filter and associated pipes clean, is egr clean. Egr on these clog terribly on the 105/102 bhp variant and seriously restrict the breathing. The later 120/130 which yours may be given year arent as bad, but cleaning is a bigger pain, the egr is a massive clump of labyrinth. Blown intercooler? Other possibilities are errant sensors making ecu supply too much fuel etc. If its the 105/102 theres a little stub off egr housing supplying map sensor, this clogs up, its poss that a pin-hole is allowing a pressure build-up which makes ecu think theres a lot of boost when there isnt, thus over-fuelling... They do eat turbos as the ones fitted are working at the top end of their tolerances thus tend to run exceedingly hot, so lots have died a smokey death from the seals losing their fight and running the engine on its own oil. Evening Andy, Thank you very much for your very informative information,The car in question belongs to an acquaintance, not a friend,he wants to 'get rid'. The car looks quite tidy, its a Megane estate(non FAP?). are they ,in your opinion, that bad? There is a lady who I often bump into walking the dogs,She also having a dog,on her second petrol Megane hatch, she tells me she knows nothing about cars, her other half looks after booking it in for services etc, but as far as she is aware,no troubles. The other half has a BMW. she liked the first Megane, so had another.
If it was cheap enough,I might have a go at it,but,I think he wants too much.nothing to lose,so I will make him an offer! Regards,Keith.

A megane of that year will be the later engine, probably 130bhp and likely has dpf.
They are a nice engine when running well. The cars are often plagued with all sorts of gremlins, I knew this before buying our grand scenic but still got fed up with always having something to fix! We sold it earlier in the year after owning it 2 years. The magane and scenic are all pretty much the same, like the various P2 volvos. You can get good ones, and good ones are nice enough cars, but I'd never advise buying something with question marks hanging over it. If its smoking, there is a high likelihood the turbo is about to burst its banks, feed the engine with oil, and blow it up. If it is the turbo it also indicates neglect as looked after examples usually fare ok. My old Mk1 ph2 scenic has been looked after from new (im second owner since 62k) and is fine, I'd happily jump in it and begin a few hundred mile journey right now (if it was insured). Edit, I missed the fact you are thinking of having a punt, if you get it for £50, try disconnecting hose from intercooler to inlet, if smoke clears or is absent straight away, you can much more readily condemn the turbo. If it wont clear or is worse, then you are more likely facing injectors or overfuelling. Obvious basics, might be trying to encourage grandma to pop this egg in her mouth here so apologies if so, but its the kinda simple thing easy to not think of with loads of stuff whirling round yer mind! I know, cos Im great at giving other people sage advice, but when its just me on my own, it often goes right out the window, leaving the trees to obscure the woodland... lol Last edited by AndyV7o; Aug 24th, 2018 at 21:38. |

The new MOT is much stricter on emissions, if he's giving it away its worth a bit of time trying to fix it, otherwise walk away.
