Body/Trim: - Rear passenger door not opening...

I was doing some odds and ends to my '79 245 on Sunday and went to open the rear passenger door from inside the back seat - no go.

Ah-ha, must be the child-lock! Jumped out, walked around and tried to open the door from the outside, but still no go. Pulled and pushed the door a little encase it was stuck from having sat for several months, but with no success.

Yes, I did pop the interior door pull first of all! Although, upon closer inspection, I don't think this one erects as much as the others, however it does make the 'popping' sound as it should.

Anybody with any experience of this before I try to awkwardly remove the interior door card to investigate? I don't need the door to function, but obviously, it would be nice!

If the car hasn't been used the door may have been opened at some time and not fully closed, even though it appears to be (this has happened to me) - so first try pushing it firmly from outside and it may 'click' to the fully closed position, after which it will work normally.

Also sometimes the door handles wear and sort of 'jam' - try giving it a good bang with a rubber mallet and pulling the handle a few times.

Failing that it's probably worth asking at your local dealers, as they will no doubt have had to open stuck doors in the past (a long shot though as your car is quite old now).

Other than that it's down to removing the door card and trying to activate the lock from inside - best to find out what you are looking for beforehand though, as the lock levers tend to be mounted on the parts of the lock which are most difficult to get at from inside.

One of those things that's 'easy when you know how', so post back what you have to do.

When you pull the door handle can you hear the mechanism moving? Is the handle as stiff as it should be?

What about getting hold of the door at the bottom and jiggling it up and down a bit in case it door hinge drop thats causing the problem?

A vague chance that holding the handle in the open position and giving a a catreful kick near the catch may free it. More likely you will need to remove the panel. A little tricky with the door closed but with care it can be done. A lever with a suitable V cut in it will make removing clips easier. If you are not sure of how it all goes try taking the one off the door that opens so youj can see where everything is located. It is likely that alinkage has come off or mechanism jammed. Again with the panel off the other door you can see how everything should work.

Hi,

I have similar issue with my S40, 2004 model.

I replaced a faulty lock. Then soon the other lock also got jammed.

I suspect it happens when I unlock car with remote and then kids pull door lever similtaneously.

How can I remove outside handle?

Any advise please?

I think you need the appropriate forum section and a new thread.

This one's ten years old and about the 240, quite possibly completely different.

(I read the thread and was about to offer observations, until I noticed the date. Probably the OP has either solved his problem or scrapped the car by now ! I don't think re-opening a very old thread is usually very helpful, unless in a rare instance it does have current relevance)

True re the old thread and different model Volvo. However.

While anyone might be reading, the simple first thing to try is, move the car.

Position on the ground can distort the car body enough to prevent a door, tailgate, boot lid....from opening, or closing.

If its distorting that much then you have serious structural issues and should be putting the car in the bin.

All cars have a smidge of flex in the body but enough to prevent a door from opening is a major issues with an underlying serious problem of structural rigidity.....or its been crashed and is bent already.

I've witnessed and experienced it over the years with many good cars Antz. Austin, Jaguar, Volvo et al. None of them were in need of scrappage.

One of the rear doors in my 1993 240 won't open. The "popper-upper" is stuck fast and I can't pull it up even with some leverage. Can aanybody help?
