Default Electronic Throttle System (Gulp!)

99' T5SE Auto. 129000 miles.

Set off out today running fine. After about 3-4 miles went for a kickdown overtake & went into 'bog down' very rough and no omph. Then the ETS lamp came on. Overtake aborted & I limped to a nearby oppo's place.

Once there I disconnected the battery (rightly or wrongly?) . Left it 20 or minutes and then fired up. It died. 2nd attempt lumpy then died. 3rd attempt fired, I kept it running by giving it some gas & it settled to an idle. ETS lamp now off.

Decided to head for home, it ran quite happily at 50mph (so not in limp?). We got home. Tried revving it gently, runs upto 3k then began to splutter & pop.

As we were going out, set of the ph2.

Just tried my code readers. Cheap Autel shows no codes pending or otherwise . Then tried my OBDsxLInk connected to my laptop & again no codes, pending or otherwise.

The car is now cold & I tried to start. 1st fire and died. Second just span on starter, no start. Dark now so 'play' stopped.

I suspect the dreaded Electronic Throttle Module, which I think can mean 'end game'

Any suggestions?

It's the ghosts of Gent, Paul...

Some options for you to consider... ECU Testing - ARD Tuning Repair Kit - BBA Reman ...before you condemn an otherwise perfectly good motor.

Out of interest...have you changed the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor in your ownership? If not it's a damn sight cheaper than a new/refurbed ETM. A thorough clean of the throttle body may also help.

Default Woohoo!

My panic maybe over. Was thinking during the night, on my old 480 tub, the turbo pipe used to blow off on a regular basis. Causing same issues as the T5 has.
Had a look just now & see what I found.

Pretty sure this would explain the lack of codes too?
Fingers crossed.

If you have a rusted Jubilee clip this bad then it is worth checking others- particularly the water hoses that are out of normal view.

Excellent! Nice handy fix

I agree with Bob in that you should check for any other potential failures such as the lower radiator and intercooler hose clips.

Right down the bottom of the pic, below my maglite you should be able to see a hose detached?
