Default Timing belt replacement v70 2.0 petrol 1997

Have been forced into purchasing the above car as my previous car expired suddenly. It's seen better days, but it was cheap. I have tried the search on the forum and tried google, but I can't find any reference to my particular car as to when the timing belt should be changed. I don't pick it up 'til later this morning so can't give you any more details about engine number etc. Thanks.

I would change it asap, unless you know for sure when it was last done.
Or at the very least, take off the cover and have a good look at it...

Fats

In my experience a visual inspection is very misleading. When I bought an R a couple of years ago the info I had suggested it was done either 12 or 90k mikes previously. My view supported by one of the very knowledgeable chaps on here was it was the latter.

Got the belt off and it was pristine so no doubt it was the former.

A visual might only reveal if it is totally knackered and by the time you remove the belt you might as well replace it. Check play in water pump at same time and replace with genuine Volvo or the manufac that makes them for Volvo - name escapes me at mo but others will know.

If had time on hands would gladly give you a hand - done two in recent years both a pain - sadly kitchen refurb eating all my spare hours

Finished changing my timing belt, pulleys, hydraulic tensioner and water pump on the 850 today. A royal pain in the ar*e, but glad it’s done now. Fairly certain it was the original 21 year old belt at 144000 miles

I thought it was 10 years or 100k but if its not on its original Volvo belt the the time frame could differ. Best change it if you have no evidence of when last done

It's all about the "peace of mind", apparently. Skinned knuckles, profanity, back ache etc etc etc don't even come into it

Apparently so !

And I had not dissimilar grief when doing the PCV on the R this summer - 20 hours to get the job done, again all that could go wrong dud just that. On both these jobs I am firmly of the beleif that if you have a goody Indy nearby who is willing to do them for a ludicrously low fee on the basis they do them all the time then they are seriously worth considering.

But like you say self satisfaction peace of mind and all that ....
