No Boost - Air Whooshing Noise
Hi folks,
I've got a 2010 XC90 2.4 D auto. Yesterday it lost boost and I got the 'Engine System Service Required' message on the dash with a yellow triangle with a ! inside. I don't have VIDA but hooked up my ODB reader and pulled code P0299. When I rev the car I hear air escaping out from the bottom rear of the engine where the turbo is. I can't see anything obvious but haven't had chance to get under it yet as I'm under the weather. I've taken a quick video to show what I'm on about . Is there anything obvious I should check first when I get chance? Thanks in advance! |

Yes. Look for the orange seal at the end of the resonator (black plastic pipe under the engine), it has most likely failed.

Perfect thanks, I found the silicone replacement for the whole resonator on eBay so figured it was worth getting. Hopefully it'll be here by the weekend and I can have a proper look into it.

The problem can also be a cracked / split / broken charged air pipe
Always best to confirm what the problem is and what new parts are required before purchasing them, or else you may end up buying bits you don't need. Get under the car, take the under-engine cover off, and have a look. The you will know what is wrong with your car. And you can order what you need.

Agreed that would be my usual approach, circumstances being what they are at the moment I took a punt on the silicone replacement. Sods law says it could well be something else of course, sounds like the resonator is a common fault either way so in this case it'd be proactive swap. Fingers crossed I can get under it in the next day or so and will report back.

Well I got underneath the car today and thankfully it was the resonator box, the top seal had failed. I swapped it out with the silicon hose I'd got from eBay and the engine is back to full power. I'm fortunate to have a pit, I wouldn't have fancied getting at the top hose clip without one it's a bit awkward.
So now I'm trying to get rid of the 'engine system service required', I've tried clearing it with my OBD reader but it's still there (I get code P0299 - boost related). Will this disappear in it's own time? I tried the reset sequence with the trip reset button but doesn't do anything. |

Give it a day or so, every chance it will clear that particular code message itself now the fault has been fixed.

Yep I took it for a good run out earlier and the code has now gone off it's own accord. Brilliant, thanks all for the help!

When I bought my XC90 last year I checked the resonator box and seals and they were intact. I was busy doing a load of other work including cambelt etc so was already busy. I removed the resonator and replaced with the silicone one so I didn't have t think about it again.
