Wow, it is q-u-i-c-k. Absolutely awesome grunt at pretty much any rpm you'd care to name. As an example, a roll-on in 4th gear from a steady 50mph to 70mph took 5 seconds dead.

Really nice inside too, all the toys even on the basic S model. Want one!

Bloody hell...

I thought that sounded quick so I tried the same thing in my T5, which did it in 3.6 secs (timed on stopwatch by passenger so not totally accurate), which just proves how good these damned diesels are getting!

Alex, 3.6 seconds is pretty quick -- was that driving at a steady 50 in 4th, hitting the throttle & starting the watch at the same time, then stopping the watch when the needle hits 70?

FYI, when "Car" magazine tested the 850 T5 in '94, they got 50-70 in 4th as 5.5 seconds, so sounds like yours is a good 'un!!!

As best as I could, cos its an auto, the revs went from starting at roughly 2500-3000rpm to whatever the finishing revs was (that was in 2nd on a 4sp auto box).

I thought although the revs were probably higher than in 4th on a manual, although not hugely different I would imagine, diesels are meant to be better lower down the rev band whereas the turbos are better higher up, (to an extent) so I thought it was in the realms of fairness - although not entirely accurate I know.

My car has a tightened wastegate, K&N filter, sports exhaust, moved horns - plus an extra 15bhp over the 850 T5 as standard, so maybe that was the difference

Not 100% sure but just surprised at how quick the D5 is!!! Me want too Craig, better fuel consumption than the T5..but at least the t5 does the 60 dash in around 6 secs :) :)

I think the V70 2.5 diesel has nearly as much torque as the t5r !! although it only knocks out 140bhp. Wierd some of these diesels. Pull slow until certain revs then they kick you in the back!!! I hear that the newer ones coming out are getting 180bhp out of the 2.5litres with massive torque. even VW golfs are reaching 130bhp out of 1.9L. I Read that any standard diesel (common rail) is capable of being tuned up to 40% of its original spec. Should be an interesting time especially now that people like Saab are sticking 3 lire jobs in the 9-5 estate. Buy tyre shares quick!!!!! Cheers Nigel.

Alex, if it's an auto, that explains it. Plus the extra 15bhp of course ;-)

Nigel, believe me, the D5 did not wait until a certain rpm before punching you forward ... the grunt was instant, everywhere! Although I did notice that acceleration tailed off above 4000 rpm in the higher gears :-)

The other thing about the D5 was this. It had done 11,000 miles, and it was the Volvo dealer service manager's company car. In other words, it had been used for test drives by anyone who wanted one & thrashed mercilessly. I found the overall fuel consumption readout in the trip computer. For the whole life of the car, it had **averaged** 43mpg.

That would save me 60 quid a month on fuel ...

As standard doesn't the D5 have more torque than the T5? Wow! I can't wait to get out in one of these and give it a try, finally Volvo doing their own diesel engine! (aside from trucks I mean)

Alex,

the figures are 163 bhp at 4000 rpm, 250ft-lb torque from 1750 - 3000rpm.

It sounds good too -- really gruff and sporty, but not obtrusive. I'm a turbodiesel convert after one test drive ...

Cheers, Craig

diesel engines, more or less by definition, have spades of torque.

cheers
