Default Wax oil/Underseal

Hi all,

My car (2007 S80 2.4d) appears to have corrosion underneath. Its nothing what I'd consider to be serious & its not had any advisories on any MOT's, but its certainly something that I want to address at some point and to smarten the look underneath in general. Its basically surface rust, causing paint to flake off parts. I guess years of exposure to wet roads & road salt in the winter would cause it.

I've heard that Wax Oil underseal is good. Has anyone had this done to their car & if so, what's your thoughts on it? Are there any garages in the Manchester area that do it & what's the cost approximately?

I assume the rust is on the bolt on arms and crossmembers rather than the body shell . It's not an easy job unless you take the parts off to treat them , The previous generation had all galvanised parts under there , but the Ford based suspension parts do not of course , However it will be many years before this issue is a worry , the metal is very thick .

There's better products these days than Waxoyl. Speak to these guys

I used the mil spec on an MX-5 and found it very tough indeed (as in, it stayed put over a terrible winter in 2010 when the 5 was belly-bottoming over snow ruts at times)

Yes, mainly the suspension parts. Its the first Volvo I've had personally & I wasn't aware Ford were linked to Volvo! What year/models did they use parts on? I'm guessing its body/suspension parts only, or is the engine Ford too?

I’ve used the standard spray on Waxoyl for many years on previous cars but it does need re-applying after a while and it was a messy job as the spray lance kept blocking. I did try the black spray on Waxoyl but that even clogged up the hand spray gun. I still use the Waxoyl underseal which comes in a tin, usually to re-cover areas where the original underseal has flaked off, but it is so thick that it needs to be warm weather and be applied with a stiff brush, and occasionally with a spatula of some sort. I regularly use aerosols of Supertrol to quickly give some protection to areas that I may be servicing at any given time. (Springs, suspension parts, brake and fuel pipes and various nuts and bolts) I’ve considered that “Rustbuster” stuff having seen it advertised in the Practical Classics but haven’t tried it yet.

Ford used to own Volvo when they also owned Jaguar and Aston Martin. Your car shares it’s platform with the Mondeo. It’s the same basic cost saving premise as VAG where a number of cars in the VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda ranges are basically VW Golfs with different body designs on the same platform. The 5 cylinder Diesel engine is a Volvo engine.

I much preffer Dinatrol products. Having been used on North Sea oil rigs for 40+ years they have proven themselves in my eyes.

In my experiance waxoil does not stop rust and readily catches fire when welding is nessesary.

Your cars, your choise of course.

Agreed about Waxoyl catching fire. I think that I am a convert. Will probably use up my remaining Waxoyl and try Dinitrol.
