Default T8 Gear Lever and Manual

Alright!

The other day I accidentally went past B on the gear leaver and put it into Gear 1.

Took me a few minutes and noticing the noise and then the revs rising to 3500rpm and the car not changing up before I realised it was in manual mode.

Anyone else done that before?

Will it do much damage just the once for a minute or two when I'd first started the car?

Thanks

No, you’ll be fine.

M on an automatic box is not really a true manual mode as the box will always intervene (self protection!) to shift up if necessary (or overrule a downshift) so no risk of any damage.

It’s maybe not best practice to give the ICE a load of beans from cold, but again no damage risk there. Some very highly tuned performance road car engines (M series spring to mind) have variable engine rev limiters that restrict access to full revs when cold, but that’s about restricting red line bouncing on cold oil, not a brief excursion into the 3,000s

It’s easy to lose track that you’re in B and drop it into manual, done it several times.

I have done it a few times, it is annoying, but I know straight away, as I have the dials set to revs and not the tear drop.

As for damage, as said no damage, just if it was something done on a delay basis and driven hard cold, it will wear the engine faster over time.

in the Design Pro, you have flappy paddles so easier to change once in a fixed gear. I now when in Pure and want to accelerate quick with ice, just use flappy paddles it starts the engine straight away.

As said- no reason for worry.. Same thing happens to me with paddle shifters as well (switches to manual mode with me forgetting/not being aware I'm in manual..) It took me a while to learn and upshift in time..

Not that I try it regularly but I have noticed that when in Power mode the power is significantly reduced on a cold engine. I assume the software restricts the power when it might damage the engine.

The manual says that the car will not allow you to reduce gears at a point that can do damage but I feel bad anyway every-time it happens. 🤣

Bumping an old thread here, but i feel you.
I have done it 2-3 times and it’s the most annoying thing.
I prefer the way the traditional mechanical gear lever works in this aspect. (D5,T6,T5)
You just have to move the stick to the left side (or right for right-handed cars), and then you get into manual mode where you upshift / downshift by moving the selector forward/backwards.
I don’t really know, how you change gears in T8, from what i read you can only downshift , but how do you perform a downshift , by moving the selector further down?
My gearshift changes gears upshift-right and downshift-left..
and to put it in manual mode you just click down from D position, which is very easy to do accidentally..

On another note, how many km do you guys do, to run-in a new engine?
I was told from the dealer that these engines are factory run-in, and as a precaution i could just be careful not to pass regularly 3500-4000 rpm before the car hits 2.500 km’s.
