Default Why?

I don't get it. Why? And why a saloon? ALL of mine are estates.

A 760 B280E is rotten slow (I had one) and I NEVER got it over 20 mpg, mostly 17. It staggered up to 105 in places where other 7/9 Volvos of mine were hitting 125. It wallowed round bends (despite new front shocks) like a ship in a heavy sea. The exhaust sounded nice once I took most of the silencing off! Many parts unavailable - including downpipes and front exhaust section. Downpipes are engine out job to change!

A 760T is all right when fully on song.

I have a B234F - a 740 GLE - and if I had a shot at a pristine low mileage one (with the balance shaft belt deleted) - I'd go there.

I have two Sports. When going right they DO light up the tarmac a bit, and the lowered suspenders increase twitcheability. But the lowered Nivos are getting hard to replace.

I have a VERY low mileage (56k) late 960 and it is smooth, moves a bit away from rest, and jolly thirsty - not as bad as my ex-760V6 but not a lot over 20 mpg. But by about 85 or 90 it is threshing and breathing hard and it peters out well before the twin cam, or the Sports (when going right) or the760T.

It has three current faults and a little shopping trolley chip. There is a drone under heavy braking that I bet a decent set of drilled and grooved rear discs would sort, one saucer bush is a bit tired, and the doorcards are VERY wrinkly. Oh yes, and one plastic trim where the passenger seatbelt comes out of the B pillar is off and damaged. Occasionally the seatbelt sticks involving 10 minutes work with the right torx bit. Otherwise as close as perfect as you are likely to find. Cambelt is due. The wheels are not that great but the tyres are very good. It owes me about £2.5k and I'd accept £6k.

Although I share your preference for estates, Roger, some people do favour saloons. It is a matter of personal choice - my wife likes a saloon for the greater security affords when transporting computers, confidential / sensitive documents, and the like. Also, in my experience, the saloon variant is the quieter of the two.

Secondly, the speeds that you quote - if they are expressed in M and not KPH - are purely academic unless you are on an autobahn or at a track day. I've no experience of 760's, but our 2.3 engined 740's average 26 - 27 MPG overall, and my similarly engined 940 returned 29 MPG over 3 years and 80K miles of ownership.

They will cruise happily on the motorway at 70 and 2.7K RPM all day, and at 80 on the motorway in Denmark at a little over 3K RPM. It's what they are built for, and what they excel at.

Regards, John.

Hi Roger and guys. Thankyou for your in depth comments. I have only just joined this forum, and its clear now, how little technical knowledge I have when it comes to the subject of "Volvo". So I say thank you for your help and input!! Saloon or not to saloon is the question??? Well i have had an estate in the past, an just fancy a change.... Cheers for now and thank you again! Kind regards. John

I've owned 2 saloons and 3 estates since getting into Volvo cars in late 2013.

Gone but not forgotten:
2x 945 estates, turbo diesel D24TIC (1993/1995 manuals).

Currently in my inventory:
2x 944 saloons, turbo petrol B230FK (both 1997 manuals).
1x 765 estate, petrol V6 B280E (1989 auto).

Yes Roger, you read that right, I've bought a V6 against all recommendations here and elsewhere.

It was mine for an offer of £350, £50 under asking price, and for that price I am happy to take a gamble lol.
It's actually really nice to pootle around in.

Anyway, back on track, I love both saloons and estates.

I cross posted a 760 for sale on this very forum yesterday, but alas, it's an estate.
I does have an MOT until December though, it's up for a paltry £320, and it's on the Wirral.

I don't see why there is a question as to why he would want a saloon? I much prefer a saloon and honestly I have no interest in estates they look crap to me.
