Diplomatic Sales (in Mayfair?) used to sell cars for export (purchaser got the VAT back, or no car tax payable or something like that?). They sold cars to diplomats and military personnel etc who ordered the cars for export to the location of their overseas posting, and sometimes brought them back home when they returned.

This car was being built in the factory September 18 to 22 1974 , this is when a team of 5 people built the car from scratch , probably an Initial showroom car as it was hanging around 3 or 4 months before being registered .

I just found this thread.

I own JDK261N, first registered 24 03 1975. As far as I can tell it’s either the oldest or second oldest road going car in the UK, and the third oldest that’s still registered with DVLA...

I bought it 3 months ago from an old chap who’d let it sit on his driveway for 10 years. Underneath all of the Moss it was really quite solid (I repaired the wheel wells and one window sill, other than that no welding has been done).

It’s now my daily driver, and the the process of a suspension refresh. It’s also now on Virgos which suit the car much better.

John

Concerning post by Classic Swede

'1975 model year was still the 164 alongside the the 240. The 260 came in for the 1976 model year (Aug 75). You can ask Volvo for build date info'

1975 MY 164 was for North America and Japan only as PRV V6 didn't meet emission requirements and was a 200 with a 164 front end, in other territories 264 launched at the the same time as 244

I am glad to see that car made it back to the road - when the ebay advert disappeared I figured feared it might end up being broken for spares. It looks much better after a clean and polish!

Cheers

I see another early 244 has turned up on Car and Classic. An orange 244DL, registered 01 Jan 1975.

So now we have:
  • Unkown numberplate Vin 12386 registered 01-12-1974
  • GBG 32N (orange 244) registered 01-01-1975
  • GEH 967N (blue 244) reg. 15-01-1975 (built 22-09-1974)
  • HCE 492N (red 244) reg. 01-02-1975
  • HDA 190N (green 245) reg. 01-03-1975
  • JDK 261N (blue 245) reg. 24-03-1975.

No comment on the price by the way.

Lucien

If I remember correctly I think we noticed that orange 244 in the 'Seriously?' thread about a year ago. I think it was being pedalled for £11,000 but didn't sell (I can't remember which platform, perhaps eBay). I see it is now advertised for £10,000 - a year on and a grand cheaper so perhaps the market isn't quite as firm as some folk believe?
