V70: Engine - Strange noise at 30 mph

Hi all,

2008 V70 2.4d, 83k. Have done nearly 50k miles since taking ownership just over two years ago, superb reliability. In the last few thousand miles I’ve noticed a strange noise only in 4th gear and at 30mph. It doesn’t do it all the time, maybe 80% of the time. Difficult to describe sound, sort of chuffing/catching noise. It’s coming from the near side end of engine (clutch/gearbox).... any ideas? Is this the DMF starting to go? Gearbox fault? Also only occurs on flat roads, ie light throttle, disappears under load or going downhill. Doesn’t occur in any other gear or at any other speed.
Have looked under bonnet, nothing obvious amiss.... let me know your thoughts.

I get the oddest noises at about 42 mph

youre going too fast, too many revs, slow down.

bloodyhell Im on the motorway y daft cow.

...could the noise be the stepper motor on the EGR? Is it clogged? Or stuck? MPG has dropped over last few months (47 down to 43 which I had put down to different tyres)...
