Default 440 door lock dead problem ;-((

The lock on my G reg. 440 has a metal flap, hinged with a small spring
methinks, which has disappeared into the lock so that a key cannot be fully inserted to open the door. The metal cover bit seems to be at the far end of the keyhole and I am not a keyhole surgeon!

A local scrappy has a handle/lock for £15 which I have to release from
captivity and fit myself.

Now - just a thought . . . could I take the handle/lock off the passenger side of may car and change it over with the drivers side or would the unlocking direction be opposite and so not work? This would mean only one key for the whole car rather than two different ones.

Anyone who has changed locks on a Volvo 440 and has info please feel free to comment. I wish the lock wasn't an integral part of the handle!!
