Default Tailgate not catching

A new problem with the tailgate - (I have the powered version) - it opens no problem (apart from the terminally rusted handle hinge pin) and closes on the button no problem ... until it meets the latch pin, where it fails to latch and rises back to fully open.

When it fails to latch, it does a wee electric motor back and forth in the latch, fails to catch, and gives up.

What I’ve tried - brute force (shutting it manually); lubricating the latch mechanism with wd40; using a screwdriver to simulate the latch pin entering the latch mechanism. Something works maybe one time in thirty.

What I haven’t tried - dismantlement of the trim to access the latch mechanism; a different lubricant.

Any ideas or similar experiences in the community?

Cheers

Could the bump stops be causing this.
They may be preventing the boot from closing because they have gone hard?

Close, it was the rubber wedges beside the latch pin. The slightest smear of Vaseline on the cured it.

After dismantling and reassembling every other part of it
