Sounds very much like a dealer demonstrator, could also be a "special" - some manufacturers made them to mark the end (or beginning) of a particular model or a major change. Often they were given as a performance related bonus, for example the Rover P6 VIP usually called the "Platinum" which had A/C, electric windows (i think), "special" Platinum paintwork and a few other extras not normally fitted to 1976 cars. They were given to the top x number of dealers to mark the upcoming end of the P6 model.

Could be yours is something similar? Perhaps a trip to a Volvo dealer armed with your VIN number (or maybe a photo of the VIN and Product plates under the bonnet might reveal something?

Many things that could be - air leaks, over-fueling, under-fueling, carb, fuel filter, plugs, leads - the list goes on.

If it left the factory with a B230, it was one of the very first (i had an 87/E reg with a B23) but that's what is in there.

As far as i've always been aware, the B230 came later (87/88) but either way, except for the plugs, ignore my suggestions for the HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm as they were for the B23 so won't fit.

What model is it though - GL, GLE or what?
The low friction engines were introduced in 1985 I believe.

My first 360 was a 1985MY registered 1986 that had a B200E.
