Default Rattle like a bag of coins at the rear passenger quarter

Volvo S40 2004.

My car has developed the most annoying rattle. It sounds like a bag of coins rattling every time I ride over a rough rode. The sound seems to come from the rear passenger quarter somewhere. I have had the wheel off, I've been under the car and tapped everything and I've the spare wheel out of the boot as well.

I'm hoping this is a common fault, because it sounds like it's getting looser and something might eventually drop off!

I have something similar, so far I 'think' its the wheelnut 'caps' the tin part of the nuts are loose. so they rattle. I think this is what I can hear over bumps. I bought a new set to rule this out, but they've not arrived yet.

'Dry' brake pads - rattling in the caliper carrier?

A small piece of road spring snapped off at the bottom and rattling in the base plate?

Loose heat shield underneath? (although that would make a 'clanging' sound).

Rear seat bench not closed into the latch? these need a good shove to secure.

The rattle is on the outside, it sounds like a bunch of washers rattling together. It only rattles when I drive the left side over potholes not the drivers side and it's the rear passenger quarter.

Hi paulmansfield, have a check if your rear strut top mounts, they have a habit of corroding and then snapping, I have V50 and S40, both have had them changed.

I'd check the anti rattle springs on calipers first. Then dust backing plates on brakes. Then I'd check exhaust to see if a hanger had broken off. I'd also check a seatbelt wasnt fully retracted and rattling off the trim inside....

Rear anti-roll bar links maybe? If there's play in them, they can create an annoying metallic sound.

I've had another look under the car and the rear passenger suspension spring has snapped. I'll get that replaced first.
