Check the TOP mount for the strut , they DO fail , dont be tempted to go for an "aftermarket" one , yes they are sub £30 when a gen is £90,, the failure of the "aftermarket one" Will be many many years Before the gen volvo one does

While your ordering the strut from your dealer, get the nuts and bolts for that suspension strut as well ,
Time to change ,,about a hour tops, needs no special tools, and DO soak the bolts/nuts in wd40/your preferred release agent over night first

I've been wondering about replacing my rear strut top mounts.

These, and the rear Trailing Arm Bushes are the only things which haven't had any attention suspension-wise.

I do get some noise over bumps at the rear and also maybe some movement when cornering hard.

Looking on YouTube the strut top mounts appear to be an unbolting/bolting job where nothing is under any tension and no special precautions needed to do the job at home using normal car maintenance tools?

one of mine Failed
Both the mounting "ears/lugs" with the holes in sheared from the body of the mount,
happened below 5pmh going over a Speed bump on a trading estate that had a Pot hole on the other side,

Car on drive, jacked + jack stands so the Whole of the back was up And stable, suspension Unloaded , Bottom bolt needed a Good Heave-ho with an extended breaker bar to shift it ,even after 48hrs of WD40 being applied about 5times, Top bolts cracked off and backed out with normal ratchet driver/extension bars.

Hardest part was getting the remains of the mount Free from the suspension strut
ring spanner and tools a lot of thought and "done"
put it all back with the car Still up in the air
that was, early feb,, cars been in daily use since, including a couple of trips to collect paving slabs,,

Okay, so I got this sorted out today. The spring had snapped in two places, and on both sides, and it was pieces of spring causing the rattling. Because the spring cups are deep, the broken springs had been missed by MOTs for years, the snapped ends were rusted and pitted!
