As part of Volvo's new engine nomenclature and to simplify Volvo's engine badging, all new engines, including the new five-cylinder 2.0D, will be badged depending on the power output. For example, the 150 PS version of the new 2.0D in the C30, S40, V50 and C70 is named D3 and an uprated 177 PS version of this same engine is labeled D4. In the Volvo S80, V70, XC70 and XC60 the newly developed 2-litre diesel engine produces 163 PS and is badged the D3. This hierarchic naming has been introduced to allow customers to more easily understand which engine is the most powerful and which fuel it is driven by - D for diesel and historically T has been used for Volvo's petrol cars. Volvo's naming strategy also follows the principle that the higher the number the more powerful it is - a D5 engine has more power that a D3.
Thus spake Volvo!

So, the D5 is the only 5 cylinder model in these newer engines? I've come across adverts on Autotrader where D4's are listed as having five cylinders, but I'm unsure as to whether those specs are correct.

The D3 and D4 had 5-cylinder 2.0 engines until, I think, the 2013 model year. From the 2014 model year they had the newer 4-cylinder 2.0 VEA engines.

The VEA engines are more powerful than their predecessors and consequently offer better performance, although they don’t sound quite as nice. Probably as a result of its 8-speed automatic gearbox, my 181 bhp 4-cylinder 2014 D4 is actually a good match for a 185 bhp 2008 D5.

Brief update.

Now up to 165k miles since my original post. Still running like a swiss watch. Only problem was a small hole appearing in the bottom of the radiator which I had replaced for about £150 + labour by the excellent chaps at Kings Motors. in Westbury.

At the next service (175k) I'll get the gearbox oil & filter changed again.

I Roll......
