Default Old style volvo s40 headlights now turn on with ignition

Hi, can anyone help?
I have an old style (2004) Volvo s40. The lights aren't supposed to turn on when the car starts but the headlights now come on automatically and I can't turn them off- I can only turn to sidelights during the day. Anyone know what could be causing it?

Thanks

Sounds like the headlight relay has stuck contacts. Find the relay and take it out and check that the headlights no longer come on.

Could be worse it could have failed on the off position!

I have feeling that OP refers to 1st gen S40 (1995-2004) in which it was possible to manually activate/deactivate DRL mode. Correct me if Im wrong, but if thats the case - you need to look for advice on relevant forum as I am certain there was a combination of high-beam stalk + ignition turn or something similar to decide if pos0 = lights on or off.

as an ex 2001 S40 owner

to on/off DRL

put light switch to the Center position , (sidelights > Green LED ON)
Switch ignition key to position II Do Not start the engine
Pull Main beam lever towards you and Hold it there,
Turn light switch to 0
release main beam lever

DRL should now be "OFF"

To turn them back On do the Same steps.

IS the correct forum for the up to 2004 S / V 40s
