Default Steering rack boot clips

I'm in the process of replacing my inner and out track rod ends. Completed the O/S today.

Since I ordered replacement boots too, I've got new clips as part of the kit.

Sadly I don't have any tools that can get in to fit the inner clips onto the rack, so I used a cable tie instead.

Would a garage be likely to fit clips or is use of a cable tie fairly common?

The rotating Knipex ear clip tool seems a little expensive for occasional use.

you will never get it tight enough with cable ties to seal the water out , they are a bodge , that is why the clamps are metal so they are strong enough to compress the hard plastic bellows and make the seal and stop it moving ..

+1 although some say had luck with ties, I'm on a not gambling side with racks - this is what kills them

Ask a garage to throw in an oeticker clamp on each side and you're free to go

I'm now determined to get the clips fitted.

Completed the other side today and removed the undertray. The O/S boot had popped off already, thankfully a pair of tile nippers was all that I needed to get the clip crimped on.

Shame the N/S wasn't so easy to reach.

Since the car is only doing a few miles this week, I decided to order a Nippex ear clip tool, so hopefully that will help !

When I did mine I found that the old/original (SMI) boots were fairly compressible rather than a hard plastic. I used a cable tie and easily got a good tight seal. A cable tie will be more prone to failure though.

To get the job done why not just pop to a garage. As you've got your undertray off, job should only take a few seconds.

Yeah, if all else fails tomorrow, I'll ask the garage doing the alignment if they can nip up the clamp.

Thanks for that; but I own the first plier you listed.

I was wondering about the swiveling ear style (to reach into the transmission's overhang) the OP referred to.

I'll search..and thanks again.
