Default Exhaust pipe back box replacement

I have a hole in the top of the exhaust back box. The original pipe is one piece from the catalytic converter to the tailpipe and it has lasted 17 years and 166k miles. (2001 petrol 2.4T V70)

Will any replacement be as good as the original? I have obtained some quotes and all require cutting the original pipe off just before the back box and replacing just the back box part of the exhaust system.

I have quotes including fitting using Klarius, Bosal and Volvo parts, with prices ranging from £220 to £300 inc vat.

Is there any difference in quality? I do not know if the volvo dealer replacement part is the same quality as the original.

I'm in the same situation with my 2007.
The original rear muffler is peeling apart at a rate which suggests it hadn't been made as well as the one in my 2002.

Volvo replacements are available here online for ~US$245. The picture shows a 3" inlet pipe so my repair procedure will match yours. Your variety of replacement brands seem not to be as available here.

I'm a firm believer in car companies having separate runs for a few specific parts for the assembly line but you might as well classify that suspicion under "hunch" given my absence of data.

I do not know if the replacements offered are of equal quality but a Volvo branded part is what I'm going with when the time comes.

From past experience-although things may have improved since last I bought one-Bosal are ok if you want a cheap fix but tend to sound cheap[if that makes sense]Do Volvo actually make their own exhausts? If -as I suspect- they don't then who does? If you can find that out maybe you could get one of those cheaper than at dealers?

Problem solved. My local volvo vehicle breaker let me have a good condition second hand exhaust, complete pipe from the join behind the catalytic converter to the back, removed from a V70 and I found a local mechanic who fitted it for me. It is an aftermarket part and probably not been on the donor car very long as it still had some traces of paper labels on it.

Replacing the back box would have fixed the immediate problem, but I would have needed to replace the mid section in the near future. Replacing the whole pipe was probably easier as it was detached at the bolted flange and the new one just bolted on. Total cost of part and fitting £90.
