DVLA Emissions Grouping for D5?

I'm Puzzled!

Had a D5 for 8-odd years, and when it died a year ago, I bought another.
Didn't pay too much attention at the time, cos there was a lot going on, but having just just received V11, I'm puzzled by the apparent increase in tax rate.

"Died" vehicle was 04 V70 D5, 2401cc, 163bhp, emissions 177, manual, tax last June £143 for 6 months (tax group I)

Current vehicle is 55 V70 D5 2401cc, 163bhp, emissions 209,auto, tax £181.50 for 6 months (tax group K)

Given they have what would appear to be the same spec engine, can some explain why the difference? If true, why on earth would Volvo modify one of its trusted engines to make it LESS efficient. Or has there been a bureaucratic blunder?

Hi,

The auto transmission is the cause of the higher emission values between the two vehicle's.

The same applies to the late model 2.4 T5 engine with the automatic transmission.

MMT5 is right, auto boxes draw engine power to operate and therefore the emissions will be higher as the engine is having to work that little bit harder all the time.

Slush boxes were the worst for that though.

I wouldn't rule out a bureaucratic blunder just yet. You wouldn't be the first to find incorrect details on registration documents
It's true that autos are more thirsty.
Does the second car have a DPF fitted. That will up the fuel consumption although I seem to recall that there was some sort of official blind eye turned to that on emissions test day?
Annual road tax here for one of those is €1100 odd

At the time my old D5 was dying, I had been diagnosed with a hip problem and put on the waiting list for surgery (although much longer story than that!). Driving the manual D5 had been becoming quite uncomfortable, so when the new auto D5 presented itself, deciding to go for it was a no-brainer. As a result of Covid, surgery has been postponed to goodness knows when, but the automatic really works. Whilst the V70 has been brilliant, with tax now some £200 more than wife's Golf and similar vehicles. it may be time to consider alternatives.
