Is it a late (dial speedo) or early (strip speedo) dash? I have a later type 164E (73 German) where the electrical problems are usually down to bad fuse connections, but I also had a flasher relay failure. I also have several earlier 140s and the voltage stabiliser on the back of the instrument can also cause problems, so see if the gauges read differently when you switch on all the lights, fan, wipers etc. There are also different senders/sensors for the temp gauge indicated by the plastic colour, so you might have the wrong one. Even if there are cooling problems the car will take quite a bit to make it boil.
