One of the handwash car wash places instead of a machine might be better if worried about your paintwork or a self jet wash?

Most of our local ones use spray jets etc before even touching by hand and of a decent enough job, although I am not as fanatical about my car cleaning as some clearly are!

No supermarket car washes near me otherwise I'd be using one. People get over stressed by this. If you are precious about your paintwork then don't do it but for the rest of us they are cheap and cheerful and do the job.

Have used machine washes on car for many years and never had any issue with any of them - normally I use the local mafia to clean mine (again a nono according to many people here) but am happy to use machines when car is grotty from a long trip or simply grotty lanes

I agree with Harvey, unless you are obsessed then the machines do a perfectly acceptable job - as do the local mafia who have never scratched or dented any of my vehicles and for £10 the job is excellent

Actually I've never had a problem on previous cars with Supermarket Carwashes and did often use Sainburys and Morrisons which were great.

One day however when the Sainsburys machine was out of order I was approached by a young lady who asked if I'd like a hand car wash for £5.

Great idea i said and when I returned half an hour later she was just finishing off the boot with loads of swirl marks on my BMW lease car and due to go back any day...aargh never thought about where she would clean her sponges and cloths other than the dirty bucket she'd had all morning.

Bit wary of the hand car washes now and would feel a bit stupid asking for an inspection of their equipment before they start, however the Range Rover Q7 brigade in Harrogate i'm sure have a good one on the corner?

I would leave it until you have time, if you value the paint. Its not just the brushes , but the chemicals they use. Most traffic film remover is caustic soda. We have a drum at work, that our van driver cleans grime off vans before they go back to the lease companies, as we arent fussed by it being eaten away.It may not show up straight away, but it doesnt do your paint any good. Its your paint and your choice. Paint marring is caused by poor washing and rotating brushes. Having sat in the mother in laws car for a carwash, once. I was shocked at the violent shaking that the nylon rushes were doing to the car. Must have been the first time in 25 years I had been in a car wash and it re inforced the belief of the damage they cause.

I personally only ever hand wash (two bucket method) or use a local valeting company (who are Autoglym certified and never abuse the car), other than that everything else is no chance.
My missus had a habit of taking her car through a machine and all I can say is that as the car is metallic black the swirl marks are horrendous! She started compromising after I kicked off and then used the local polish hand wash people (ie the ones who operate from a garage forcourt). As she is now awaiting her new car I am going to insist that she uses the valeting company that I use or worse case ......... I do it!!
