MPG on XC60 D4 181 2015
Hi Guys,
Just wondering what kind of mpg you are getting on this model? 2015 XC60 D4 181hp (Pirelli tyres) I am getting around 33 / 34 mpg mixed drive. I don't drive in city or stay in traffic jam. I would expected it to be more on this model. I am wondering if there is anything wrong with the car that I need to look at. Many thanks for info. |

Had my D4 auto FWD from new in 2014. When I bought the car, I tried to maximise mpg with light right foot, ECO mode etc to see what I could get, this was about 40mpg (see my signature when I was using Fuelly app). Now with normal driving style, for my start-stop commute every day and around town at weekends, I average about 35-36mpg in traffic. On a longer run, usually get low-mid 40s. Have had EGR work done etc, no difference before and after this work in MPG.
Definitely worse in winter (apparently partially due to changes in formulation of diesel in winter months, although not sure if that's urban myth!). Seems very dependent on whether A/C on, and can definitely get another 1-2mpg in Eco mode.

Like others have mentioned I get more MPG in summer and less in Winter. Eco mode seems to make a bit of difference on longer runs. Getting about 43MPG since car was new over 40K+ miles with about 40mpg at the moment and up to about 52MPG on a run (measured over a full tank). This is with the auto gearbox on a 190PS FWD.
Edit: also on Pirelli Scorpion Verde (not all season) tyres. These seem to last well (39K on front set, rears half worn at 43K) but not convinced they grip as well as others brands and will probably swap out all four next time they wear out.

Thanks for response guys.
So it seems I must have some issues. The car has got 55k. No way I could average 40pm/50 on the long run. My one on the full tank shows 500 miles btw. I was getting easily 45/50 mpg on Skoda Superb 2.0 171 estate so I drive normally. I think I suspecting brake pads. I was doing some work on the car and noticed that the rear pads are not loose. Seems that corrosion expanded the brake calipers a bit and the pads does not move that freely any longer. Probably same is happening on the front. |

My Sep 17 D4 FWD Auto has covered 36K from new.
Over the past 2½ years, my screen reading currently shows an average of 41 mpg. However, before I retired 18 months ago I was travelling regular 180 mile motorway trips once a week plus 2/3 return trips of 150 miles to London each month. For this 25K, I managed to maintain a solid average of 48 mpg. As others have said, low temperatures (<10 degrees C) noticeably affect the average and the VEA engine is better (and quieter) in warm weather. I'm not sure I found a big improvement using ECO setting, but on long motorway trips it's probably worth using. Mine has not had any hardware/software mods on the EGR/cooler system and the Volvo recall checker continues to show my car as having "No Outstanding Recalls". I assume/hoping it will not require any action... as it currently runs like a peach. Great car to date.

Tyre pressures can make quite a difference; I have noticed an improvement of at least 2-3 mpg when running at the “eco” setting of 39 psi with both of my cars.
