Default XC90 Spare Wheel Winch Won't Winch Up

So, unwinching the space saver was nice and easy, is now fitted without any problem. However, the winch won't go back up. No matter how much I wind it, the cable ain't going anywhere and is just hanging limp on the ground.

Any ideas what could be wrong or more importantly, are there any diagrams which show how I can get inside it to see what's happened?

Thanks,

Mike.

Thanks Rob, but the car is under warranty so I'm hoping Volvo will repair FOC.

Assuming they can fit us in any time soon! I'd hoped something like this would be easy to schedule in as it should be an easy thing to check/repair, but apparently not.

Looks like we're going to be driving around with a tyre in the boot for the foreseeable future!

Hi Rob, fitted a tow bar earlier and overtightened the spare wheel, snapped the cable, the winding mechanism works fine, just snapped the cable near the end, could get it sueded back together (like a crimp?) but if you have the whole mechanism with the cable in one piece how much posted? need one asap cheers

Apologies, only just read this. If you still need one, send me a PM.

Another puncture and the spare wheel winch is knackered again. Got the spare off OK and it wound up without a problem, but the next day when trying to put the space saver back on and it wouldn't wind up, had completely jammed.

All we could was cut the cable. Really frustrating, I just hope Volvo replace it again, but this sort of thing does me concerned for when the warranty runs out next year.

Is this a relatively common issue?

I realise the cable is tucked away out of passing road dirt, however, how often does it get used therefore causing failure through lack of use. I would have thought a dealer should have unwound it, greased it and wound it back up as part of the service.

Any thoughts?

It's not on the service sheet so you'd have to ask to have it done as an extra.

Default Spare Wheel Winch

I suspect it's a design issue. The Cable on ours was bright and shiny - no hint of rust but it got stuck and refused to unwind to replace the spare.
I think you need someone to apply weight to the cable as you wind it up - not easy if your on your own or your passenger doesn't fancy getting dirty on the side of a road - and how would you know to do it in the first place?
I drilled a hole near the spindle and sprayed Plusgas in. Then "The Mrs" swung from the cable whilst I turned the spindle back and forth. Surprisingly it worked!! It untangled itself!
The spare is back in place and no bill to pay.
I hope it works for other readers.

there was a faulty batch which tangled these were subject to a recall , might be worth checking with your dealer if yours was affected
