Default Replacing fuel filler pipe clamp

Servicing the car I see that the clamp holding the fuel filler to the tank inlet stub is pretty crusty although not leaking.

It seems to be a 2 part clamp so hopefully a straightforward replacement but looking at Vida there is a gasket and a valve in there.
Am I going to disturb these and cause a leak, so do they (or at least the gasket) need to be replaced at the same time?

1999 V70 2.4 Petrol N/A

Thanks
Joe

Default straight forward job

Hiya Joe,

this is a straight forward job just give the old clamp
bolts a blast of wd-40...
let them sit for a bit then just undo the screws, it should split in half & that is it wipe around to give a little clean, & simply add the new clamp..I did two one on my 854 96 & the other on my S70 98

hope this helps m8

Good Luck

Vol.

Yes, there are no gaskets or bushes, just the clamps. The bolts often seize and sometimes snap off, but you can use 6mm bolts I believe. As said, if you are very careful and use wd40, you should be fine. It is easier with the rear wheel off!

Good to hear the practical experience, I don't want to turn a non-leaking joint into a gusher.
I think the lower clamp is so rusty it will break off with pliers to make things easier.

Cheers

Joe,

I thought you'd sneaked round and taken a photograph of my car!

The fuel filler pipe clamp on my 1998 V70 Tdi is in an almost identical state and this has answered the question I was going to ask about it. I'll get some new clamps ordered.

Mine was VERY crusty, so until I can be arsed to renew it I drenched it in spray grease....

I had a bit of trouble finding anyone that was prepared to sell these clamps as a pair. You could buy one, but not both (they are the same top and bottom)!!

I went to Skandix in the end, just to preserve my sanity....

I found on my TDI that if one is crusty, they both need changing. As the joint is below the centreline of the tank, it's worth leaving this job until you have a 1/4 fill, otherwise it gets very messy.

I soaked my new clamps in Waxoyl before fitting them, then sprayed Underbody Waxoyl over the whole joint area afterwards. The joint is very exposed to road-spray, and I didn't want to have to do the job twice.
