No idea on a diesel engine so you'll have to take what the others have said, but, what state is the sealing ring on the dipstick? On my petrol engine the rubber O ring had hardened so wasn't making a good seal, if everything else is OK put a fresh flexible O ring on.

As the others have said, this is pretty normal on the tdi. Unlike on a petrol it doesn't create a vacuum in the inlet when at idle and so the gases aren't pulled through the breather on top of the rocker cover. They will come out via the easiest route, if your dipstick seal is poor then that's it.

That’s great, thanks. I am slightly more knowledgeable now, that I was before joining this forum.
It’s at about 170,000 miles, so I suppose the dipstick has been in and out quite a few times, so I guess it could be ready for a new seal. |

Just had a look at my dipstick and there is no seal on it. Just the remains of a hard substance in the area, where there was probably once a rubber seal. I think this is probably the remains of the seal.

LOL
If I tell the whole story, when I had issues with mine, on checking I found that the top of the dipstick had been broken and stuck back together with epoxy by a previous owner, with associated ruin of the sealing ring. Again, not familiar with the Diesel engine but on the petrol engine there is an updated dipstick but it required an updated tube too.

That’s maybe what has happened to mine. I did try to scrape the recessed area, thinking that I had the remains of a hardened seal in there, but it felt solid.
