In defence of Haynes both my 850 and V70 manuals have 35 Nm - 26 lbf ft in old money.

I just tighten them up to a point that I know I can get it undone again without too much issue. I have never had a sump nut come undone or leak because it wasn't tight enough!

This is the same with wheel nuts. Whenever I have new tyres fitted, the first thing I do is loosen the nuts off, so I am able to change a spare wheel on the road side. Garages use their three foot bar and turn it well past the torque setting, leaving the wheels impossible to undo without a similar length of bar to undo it. Ridiculous!

Have to admit in practice I'm much the same, the sump plug gets a new washer then done up using a spanner held in the middle rather than the end to limit the torque, 26Nm isn't all that much certainly no need for swinging on it like a gorrilla. Wheel nuts, I have a draper extendable wheel brace, use it short (1ft) to do them up and extended (2ft) to undo them easy.

Think I did mine to 36nm, with a bit of copper grease on it.

My mistake not Mr Haynes! In a senior moment I thought you were referring to the sump bolts that secure the sump to the engine block and not the drain plug: doh!

The correct figure is of course 35 Nm.

I think the sump plug is supposed to be fitted dry @ 35Nm - copper greased at 36Nm is too low a torque and could work loose as copper grease dissolves in hot oil.
