Controle Technique - Fail
My T5 has just failed it’s Frenchy MOT.
Not too badly though. One thing I can’t fathom tho’ is a ‘dust cap’ on the left hand side of the steering rack. Apparently it’s just a plastic part and mine has ‘gone’. The fail papers lists it as : 2.1.3.g.2 ETAT DE LA TIMONERIE DE DIRECTION : capuchon antipoussiere. Can anyone link me to this part or even a picture of one so I know what I’m searching for please? TIA.

Does it mean there is a plastic tie wrap missing off the end of the gaiter. That might be classed as the cap!!

That is a possibility! Hadn’t thought of that. I guess I’ll have to have a look at the other side and see what’s different.

I would think it most likely the gaiter has a split in it and will let in dirt and water. the description has possibly got lost in translation. I think the only way to be sure is have a good look under there and it hopefully will become obvious.
It could even be the boot on the trackrod end and not the rack at all.

A quick google search (in french ) tells me that it's most likely the gaiter that's either cracked, not fixed correctly or missing.
shouldn't be too expensive to replace

Morning Paul, I am not being facetious when I ask, can you not find out from 'the tester' or is that not allowed? Anyway, good luck in your search, will be like a bus mans holiday for you.
Regards,Keith.

No worries Keith. Normally I wait at the test centre and the chaps take me under and show me any fault. This time I didn’t. He did get his list of English terms out and the capuchon antipoussiere is ‘dust cap’ which I knew, he drew a diagram, but still left me unsure.
Easiest way, I guess is to print the pic’ that MikeGMT kindly posted and nip back to the tester.....

The 'Natives' at the centre are friendly then, that helps a lot Paul, can be very frustrating when they are officious and make you feel you are treading on eggshells. How is your French? a lot better than mine,no doubt. I find even though my Frangley is rubbish,I find if you at least try, they are more than willing to meet you half way. The 'shout louder in English' method leads only to disaster!
I must stop faire des vagues. Regards,Keith.
