Unhappy V70 D5 Fuel Pump location?

Total newbie here Hoping someone can help... Where is the fuel pump on my car?
I've got a late 2007 V70 D5 (one of the earlier Mk3s) with quite high mileage.
I recently had issues starting the car (wasn't completely from cold) and had to call the RAC to get it started. He ran a few diagnostics then said it was a fuel pump sticking issue. He reached under the rear of the car and gave it a thump and then it started. He advised that this would only get worse and that I could do with getting it replaced.
I tried to get my local garage to change the pump but they have called to tell me that their factors guys have said that it's an engine mounted pump rather than the in-tank type and so given the mileage and cost of the work I would be better off changing the car. At the moment this isn't an option for me so I needed to confirm this was right before making any hasty decisions!

My concern is, if the fuel pump is engine mounted, how come giving the tank a thump got the car to start? Was it just a fluke?

Thanks for any advice you may have

My VW Passat 2.0TDi (2006) I had some years ago did this. My understanding is that there's a low pressure "lift pump" situated in the fuel tank that supplies fuel to the high pressure pump that supplies the injectors.

There was a dodgy batch of lift pumps from around that time which would jam on the motor spindles. Normally these are lubricated by the diesel in the tank and sometimes they failed after incorrectly filling up with petrol, which briefly stripped the motor of the natural lubrication of diesel.

A thump on the bottom of the fuel tank would sometimes be enough to free the motor but essentially the only remedy was to replace the pump.

Normally I couldn't hear the rear pump but a few days before it failed I thought I could hear it humming.

This is the sum of all my knowledge on this subject - I hope something within that points you in the right direction!

There is a pump in tank that feeds fuel to the main high pressure pump bolted to the engine,

If the recovery guy bashed the tank then am guessing its one in the fuel tank thats faulty,

Its a tank off to get to it as there is no access point under rear seats and its better than the fuel tank is as empty as possible before doing it

Thank you, Both. It makes a bit more sense now.
I've ordered a replacement 'in-tank pump' so will give that a try.
Cheers
