Bouncy front end

If you can move the bush and arm easily in the hole and can see decent gaps around it, it's gone. The newer cross bushes aren't attached as stated above but they shoud be snug in the hole. I have just fitted an entire Meyle unit that cost £30. I can recommend their products in general.

Upper engine mounting replaced at the weekend and it's not fixed the bounce. Happy enough to buy and fit new front struts, but is there any chance that the lower mounts could be the culprit?

have you tried bouncing the front end up and down by hand? if it takes ages to settle like a big bowl of jelly then yeah it's probably the shocks

if that's not the case, then put the engine up on axle stands under the subframe, grab a solid looking part of the engine and wiggle it about left to right and front to back

if it's wobbly left to right then change the mount under the pulleys on the left side (facing the engine from the front of the car)

if it's wobbly front to back then it could be the main 2 mounts

or maybe it's all 3 ?

does it have vacuum mounts and is it possible there's a leak or disconnected pipe or something (mine doesn't I don't have experience with that myself)

its also worth checking the top rubber spring mounts they become un bonded from the centres allowing the shock to move up and down within the spring they are easy to change when you replace the shocks.

Not sure whether it has the vacuum mounts, I didn't realise it was a possibility until I read about them in the haynes manual.
I'll have to do some more investigating!

Well, the bouncy front end turned out to be a bouncy rear end! Yesterday I was feeling a bad vibration at moderate speed, so stopped in at my local garage. NSR tyre had worn unevenly and in one place down to the core on the inner edge. This was causing the problem and by all accounts, not unusual for Dunlop tyres to have problems near the end of their life.

Must be an alignment issue, especially if it worn on one edge. The tyre could have been low in tread, but even still, it shouldn't wear down to the cords in one spot.

Tyres shouldn't wear unevenly if they're properly inflated and the alignment is within spec.

Sounds like some suspension work needs doing. Play in suspension components like control arms and worn out shocks can lead to premature tyre wear. If there's play in suspension, the alignment simply can't be right.
