Thanks, that's good to know. I'll get a price from them also.

Excellent work!
I'd agree that keeping the D5 alongside is a shrewd move, especially if the one you have is going to get a little TLC... whilst nothing is too hard nor dear (relatively speaking) some jobs are a little more involved hence some "downtime" may be expected thus a second car is always a very agreeable luxury if you can. Mine was in a rather sorry state when I bought it... paint was a mess (car wash car!) and the wheels were kerbed and flaking, plus the previous owner had used a "specialist" latterly so whilst maintained well as a car... as an R there were a few loose ends. Wrong plugs fitted, no history of fluid changes, anti-skid warning on (ended up being the DEM) and sporadic 4C warnings (turned out to be the OSR ride height sensor) so whilst it's been a labour of love, there's not been anything too scary over the past year or so. I've actually been using it daily over the past few days as I've temporarily swapped my D5 for a friends van... and whilst I'm missing the economy and the general "no ****s given" approach I use with the D5, the R is doing an admirable job though I can't ignore the ride quality however I have new shocks sat to go on so hoping that reduces the amount of chaos that happens on broken surfaces. Aside for that and the sub 30mpg, it's surviving trial by baby, prams and errant Sunday drivers though my nerves are shot to hell! Anyways, again I digress... best of luck with yours and if there's owt I can help with then drop me a line. I'm by now means an expert, very much still learning but have definitely found ways of keeping these things on the road without the huge costs that some seem to think they generate. All the best with it. Cheers |

First job I'd do on the "R" is to remove the "rat catcher" (google it or search for it on here) from the area around the first resonator box. Its a bracing strap across the propshaft tunnel, but its location, and method of fastening WILL mean it WILL catch on something the car passes over, causing it to rotate and stuff the exhaust resonator trailing edge into the propshaft - stuffing it up. Volvo will then ask you for £ 1000 plus labour!!!
Like the warning about the locking wheelnuts I ignored the advice to remove said rodent killer, and paid Volvo the £ 1000 for the new propshaft for the privilage. I replaced the bolts with DIY tabs to hold the heat shield in place (1st image - you can see the dink in the resonator lip where it hit the prop) the second smaller image is the damage to the prop. He had the prop rebuilt by a propshaft specialist (somewhere in Suffolk IIRC) who cut-out the center section and welded in new, then re-balanced. End result is no vibration. However, the exhaust isn't right. There is a few mm clearance between the middle silencer and the prop, but when the exhaust gets hot it expands and moves enough to rub the prop causing a ringing noise. Generally the exhaust is in a bad way, the rear box has lost most of the outer layer of steel, inner layer still hanging in there. I found a used SS exhaust which i'll pickup next week and swap over, which should solve both issues. The same seller has a rebuilt / upgraded angle gear box which has covered 10k miles apparently for £575, don't know if that is a good price or not. I don't currently need the angle gear, but it might be good insurance!

Hmmm, wasn't aware of this either... but something I'll definitely check and remedy as the council seems insistent on building ever increasingly huge speed bumps around here.
The angle gear seems ok at that, prices for R stuff seem to be a bit hit and miss at times but it's also something I'm considering - just had the sleeve replaced on mine and was advised there is slight wear on the splines angle gear side so next time the sleeve goes, it'll more than likely need a angle gear too. But it's working so as long as I avoid any power sliding round Asda's car park in the snow and such like, hoping it'll be fine for a few years yet. My exhaust is also showing its age now but I'm loathed to replace it with anything aftermarket in case it gets boomy / intrusive. |

The seller of the (used) SS one says there was no drone from it, so i'll take a chance, and if annoying it will go back on ebay. At under half the price of the Volvo item it's worth a punt!
