Default Auto Gearbox

Is the auto gearbox in the XC40 / XC60 and XC90 the same? Does anyone know what type of gearbox it is, and if there are any known issues?

Aisin box. Same for 90 and 60. Not sure about 40. Issue or feature is hesitation if pushed both off the line and shifting down. Loves to stay in higher gear and then changes down very perceptibly. Manual overrides do not help. Not a great box. Really discourages spirited driving. One of the things you just have to accept is not great about this car.

But surely if you bought an SUV it's not necessary for it to drive like a hot hatch or sports car.Just enjoy the comfort, mine does a good enough job, 0_60 in around 6.5 secs, not exactly slow!

I dont actually mind the gearbox, its not as nice as the one's i've had in previous BMW's, but much nicer than the one in the Land Rover Discovery Sport...

Thanks for the info re - Aisin as the manufacturer. It appears to be fully fledged auto.. pretty unusual these days.

Personally, I’ve never thought the hesitation, after you plant your foot, is a gearbox issue, rather than a traction/spin control thing.

With 400Nm odd of torque, I’m sure there’s some onboard gadgetry easing you off the line and not allowing the wheels to spin.

Admittedly, it does take some getting used to, and I have found myself anticipating the lag.

Its the familiar Asian Warner TF80 6 speed with an extra 2 gears , and brought up to date of course . nice how it changes down and down as you slow ...

8 speed geartronic was perfect in our XC60, even better with polestar optimisation. Be surprised if it’s gone backwards into the new models.

This AW box is used extensively across the Volvo, Toyota and Lexus range of vehicles. In its in-line form it is also used in the Audi Q7 diesel 3.0 v6 cars. The transverse and in-line versions share many common parts with the main difference being the shorter length of the transverse version plus the inclusion of the final drive in the case. The way they achieve this shortening is to replace one of the stacked brake packs with an external [to the planetary] brake band.

There’s a couple of videos on YouTube on the Weber University channel where professor John Kelly opens both versions up and explains the power flow through them, should anyone be interested in how stuff works.

Coming from a BMW 335d and it’s excellent auto box I thought I’d be disappointed with the Volvo but it’s fine for what I want.

The only thing I don’t like is the very clunky and mechanical gear selector that is very poor compared to the BMW electrically actuated system. Half the time I’m wondering what sort of damage I’m doing when selecting drive or reverse.
