Flywheels
Are the flywheels on all v70 the same or are thry engine specific, or year specific?
Would a petrol 2.4t fly fit a diesel engine? What would cause teath to break off a fly?

You don't mention if yours is auto or manual, or the year.

You have a pre engaged starter motor so the starter pinion should be engaged with the flywheel a split second before turning the flywheel to start the car.
A poorly functioning throw out mechanism on the starter motor would mean the starter pinion is already spinning before engaging with the flywheel teeth and this high speed high torque clash could easily damage the flywheel teeth.

Generally, an engine will only stop in one of severl discrete places as once the rpm gets below a couple of hundred the compression will stop it suddenly. Therefore the impact from the starter pinion is only going to be in one of a couple of places so it’s inevitable that some teeth will wear more than others. A broken tooth could be unlucky, or a lazy pre-engagement, or even a dodgy switch / relay that allows the starter pinion to bounce.
Automatic transmissions don’t have a flywheel, there’s plenty enough weight in the torque converter to carry the rotation on past the power and compression spikes in the cycle. They do have a flex plate which permits the converter to float somewhat as well as provide a mount for the ring gear. It’s far more common to see tooth damage on a flex plate than ever it is on a flywheel, but it can happen. |

Hi thanks for the reply guys I'm sorry for the vagueish question!
Should have said it is an auto... well both are. I have a 2.4t b5244t3 petrol 01 and seen a 03 D5 but with an apparent flywheel with knackered teeth. Just wondering if the fly wheels are swappable.

Interesting, I'm more manual minded with fly and clutch. ..not used to working on autos. Has anyone experienced this with missing teeth? How easy would it be to replace?

Depending on the garage it's around 5-8 hour job.
It's a decision between finding a place with cheap hourly rate or a good Volvo indy who knows how to get the gearbox out with least time and effort.

I'd recommend changing the starter motor at the same time as if that's at all sluggish it'll start to chew up the new flexplate if you don't. I learnt the hard way on a S60 D5 auto if the starter is at all slow engaging or makes a noise change it. £150 is a lot less than paying to change the flexplate.
If the starter won't engage because the flexplate teeth are too damaged you might still be able to start it by turning the engine over a quarter or half turn by using a 30mm socket on the crank nut and then using the starter. This way it engages with a different part of the starter ring and can run over the worn part. A PITA I know but it can sometimes get you out of a problem. |

The most I've ever spent is £12 for a new brush pack.
