QUOTE=bigandquick;307604]This is rubbish. See the separate thread running on here about the reliablility of auto boxes:
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=46102 THERE YOU MAY HAVE IT,IT'S A 2ND HAND CAR SO WHO KNOWS?TO SAY IT'S RUBBISH SEEMS A LITTLE STRANGE TO ME.I HAVE AS ALLREADY SAID I'VE HAD THE CAR 3 WEEKS SO I DONT KNOW AND DOUBT WILL EVER KNOW WHAT ALL THE OTHER DRIVERS DROVE LIKE. If looked after they will go and go. The trouble is too few people knowing anything about them and offering their 'opinions' which fall far short of the truth. One of the people who agreed with this diagnosis was stephens engineering PALMERS GREEN NORTH LONDON ACCORDING TO THEIR WEBSITE BIN AROUND 40 YEARS.ALSO SOMEONE CALLING THEMSELVES SMC (SWEDISH MOTOR COMPANY IN E17 AND MANY MANY OTHERS There is a separate ECU which controls the box and the likelihood is there is an eletrcical problem. As others have said, pull the codes, find out what the problem is first then you can have kittens over how much a repair might be.THE ONLY THING I'M HAVING KITTENS ABOUT IS THESE PEOPLE CHARGE SO MUCH FOR SO LITTLE IE:- £1400 FOR A 12000 MILE WARRANTY,AND THAT MANY PEOPLE SEEM TO BE OF THE OPINION THAT A VOLVO FWD BOX IS ONLY GOOD FOR SO LITTLE MILEAGE WHEN MY TOYOTA HAS DONE 300,000 AND STILL GOING ON THE ORIGINAL BOX Just had a root, you could try Brady Automatics in South Woodford. They're the nearest specialist listed. Give them a call, they might be able to advise over the phone.[/QUOTE] |

You've come onto this forum asking help and advice. If you don't like/agree with what you hear there's no need to be rude.
The majority of 850 owners will tell you they've had little or no trouble with auto boxes. I've had one with no problems. They are a good solid box made by a reputable manufacturer. And I stand by what I say, any claims of them only being good for 100k are rubbish based on the experiences of fellow forum contributors and fellow owners. NOW STOP SHOUTING

Just why did you come here? For advice or just for a whinge?
You've been given plenty of advice and help, we can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves. Without reading the codes you're literally peeing in the wind and if you hadn't been so agressive you might have had people offering to come and read the codes for you or to lend you a PNP switch for you to try out etc etc...

Hi 5seaterT5, basicaly you have had some very sound advice. There are sevral things that will help with your auto.
When the problem arouse did the orange arrow light come on and flash? When you select 3 and L the orange arrow light will come on but it should not flash. Have you checked the level of the transmission fluid? (There is very good guidance in the owners manual on how to do this, the fluid needs to be warm) What condition is the fluid in, a good indication is the colour, also what does the fluid smell like? (Does it smell burnt) Where you towing when the fault developed? These auto boxes are Asian and are of fairly good quality, they can also be found on the Ford Galaxy, they do last for a long time, like anything they life spam will be reduced if abused. Has the car done any towing prior to your ownership especialy in warm climates? If so the transmision fluid could be cooked. You will have to bight the bullet and have the codes read, or ask one of the guys from a reputable transmission specialist to test drive the car and get there opinion. In case you did not realise typing in capitols is shouting and typing in red is very angry, it is like writing a letter in red ink should not really be done. I hope you get it sorted, I drive a auto T5 that has been modded to aprox 270 - 280 bhp with 135k on the clock with origanal auto box and have no problems with it at all. Good luck. |

As with most things on these cars, faults will bring up a warning light - it makes for easy diagnosis and correction.
