Interesting, the difficulty with some specialists is many of them don't have access to the Volvo servers to do the software upgrade.

Typical dealer, i could get it done cheaper etc. etc. my advice (although not in any legal capacity) would be to write to the dealer pointing out the fault, that it was present at the time of sale and that this is a breach of the sale of goods act 1979 section 14(2) under which it is an implied term of the contract that the goods supplied are of satisfactory quality and confirm any steps you are taking.

What you don't want to happen is that any offer of a contribution is construed as a settlement, if the fault goes on to require a new box then, presumably, you will want the dealer to pay for this.

While its good to be proactive the best way would be to hand the car back to the dealer and say sort it or give me a refund, however, i know that you don't want to do that.

So it might pay to be a little careful how you word/record your claim/accept any sums of money.

Have a look here for, a useful thread on gearbox replacement:

I looked into replacment boxes when i convinced myself i would have a problem, there seem to be loads of places in Birmingham, although i don't have any experience of them

Peter at Charlwood Volvo has a guy who has specialised in rebuilding auto transmissions for most of his life. I suggest you ask Peter for more info. Peter has told me he has customers who've done over 192k on his rebuilt auto boxes.

Peter has the latest full Volvo VIDA software.

I always go there for work on my Volvos.

Sorry guys i have not posted for a while as my situation is a bit messy and a bit long winded but detailed to the best of my ability.

Dealer has retracted on every verbal offer he made to me i will name and shame them shortly but for legal reasons im going to wait.

In a previous post i stated that he offered to pay £160 plus vat as this was the quote he got from a specilist in the basingstoke area which is 100 miles from my house and my local dealer quoted me £250 all in for transmission oil change and software update he inisted i paid the differance or get the car that i was not using to him at my expense (total knob) after 2 weeks he told me he had booked the car in at my local dealer at which i took the car left it there and phoned them in the afternoon to be told that the gearbox service has not been done as dealer would not authorsise payment before service to gearbox was done to which they flatly refused to do due to previous similar situations with other cowboy dealers refusal to pay.

end result=TOTAL WASTE OF TIME

I have now took leagal advice and have been told to chase the matter with the finance company as i have a £5000 loan with black horse finance and have had to send them copies of all the emails between myself and the cowboys and they are just as bad to deal with as you cant send them emails everything has to be by post and all replies sent back to me are sent 2nd class they dont return your calls usual delaying tactics but they say they will mediate between myself and the knob heads and my reply to them is not interested the finance agreement is with blackhorse so im not interested in the dealer he is your problem i just want my car fixed to which i hire from you and is not fit for its intended purpose and has not been since the day i brought it,they have since verbally agreed to pay the £250 for the software update and oil change but im still waiting for a letter to confirm this in writing to state clearly that this is transmission oil change and update should it resolve the problem i will hapilly go away but should it not i want confirmation in writing that blackhorse will endeavour to assit me in resolving this problem which they verbally did but did not state it in letter i received yesterday that they want me to sign to say i agree to them paying me £250 for my local dealer to REPAIR my gearbox and also tried to implement in the letter FULL AND FINAL SETTLEMENT,yeh RIGHT dont think so ,told them exactly where to stick that one.

There is only going to one way to sort this out i think and that is through the courts ,so be it i will follow this through to the bitter end.

I have got a quote from my local dealer for gearbox rebuild which was in the excess of £4500 plus vat also spoke with Peter Suchy at Charlwood volvo absoloute 5 star quote of £3200 all in for a total rebuild subject to extreme damage to gearbox casing plus free courtesy for two weeks whist the work is being done, now thats what i call service well pleased with that really polite and helpful too.

Sorry to hear it has ended up like this, sadly some dealers just won't face up to their responsibilities, but its good news that you have the finance company to pursue which will be your best route.

If you do go the court route less than £5K will be small claims and you can do this online now https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/web/mcol/welcome

Better still, if you took legal cover with your home insurance you should be covered for the cost of pursuing your claim, worth checking and contacting them sooner rather than later for advice.

Good luck

I wish I hadn't come across this post, as it looks like I'm part of the 2WD gang.
I've spoken to my local specialist and dealership, they both recommend I have the angle gearbox replaced as just replacing the splined sleeve will only last about a year and probably end up having to replace the angle gear.

The specialist says he has never replaced just the sleeve, the angle gear is always broken as well. He says he will tell me if the Angle gear needs replacing while he replaces the splined sleeve.
So if the angle gear is broken am I at the point of no return, in otherwords can I get him just to carry on replacing the splined sleeve and get the angle gear done at a later date?

Sorry but that info you've been given is nonsense. The angle gear hardly ever fails unless it developes an oil leak that is ignored. There are loads of people who've had just the sleeve replaced, including me, without angle gear problems.

Find someone with more experience of the sleeve issue?

Didn't speak to the dealer directly as my girlfriend took the car in with "anti-skid service required" on the dash. Came back with:

"all wheel drive n/w, dtc dem 0006 pump faulty signal, testes carried out, requires new pump then recheck of dem read outs"

on the vehicle health report and was charged aprox £400 for:

"46504 Oil pump Active on Demand Coupling replace".

Not quite sure what they did but the warning has gone...sounds to me like the pump that transfers oil pressure for the haldex coupling was broken. Would explain why the front tyres were so much more worn than the back...

Is it possible to check the oil level in the angle gear, or just look for signs of a leak?
