possible etm problem on s80
Hi all. My dad has just bought a 2002 s80. Its a 2.4(170) auto with 88k on the clock, FVSH and the chassis number says its a 2002 model not late 2001. He hasnt done many miles in it yet but today it stalled when slowing down for a roundabout. It started up again straight away and has shown no problems since. We had replaced the battery just before this happened so its possible that this might have had something to do with it e.g. the ECU resetting itself.
Before he bought the car I googled for reliability issues and obviously the ETM problems showed up however I assumed that as its 2002 it wouldnt be affected but after reading this forum I can see that this isnt necessarily the case. Hes now worried that its going to be a problem, possibly a dangerous one at that and we'd like to know how to tell if the ETM is one of the affected units. Is it just a case of having a look at it to see if its a marelli with or without the yellow sticker? Thanks in advance for any help. |

If it is a 2002 model it has the updated ETM, these don't fail completely like the older units, but can still be cleaned.
What would be a better idea than guessing is to get the car plugged into a diagnostic system and the DTC's read (just because no light is on the dash doesn't mean no codes are present).

iv got a 2003 s80 and i had one of the crap etm,s on mine. Volvo said you cant have one, bring it in and we'll look. so i did. they just looked at each other and said, you have got one === but a funny thing has since happened. the dealer phoned me with an offer if i was interested = long story short= they fitted a con tactless etm at there cost and gave me a full refund on the new etm that i payed for.
all i have to do is go to the dealers for a diagnostic every now and then just to see how its working= fine by me = drives like a new car now.

Wow nice job! Which dealer???? I'm really interested, I've heard about the contactless one that's being trialed but its not by a Volvo dealer and it's not a Volvo product (Well it is, but it's been modified independantly)
