Default Is this an early sign of ETM failure?

My wife says that twice in the last few days the car hasn't responded to throttle when at low speed. Turning engine off and on again has put it back to normal. I've just driven 30miles and it is fine, with no warning lights .

What do you think - early signs of an ETM problem or something else, if so what? It is the original ETm but a few years ago a warning light came on and I've just checked the invoice which shows the local indie 'cleaned throttle body and upgraded ECM and ETM software' according to the invoice.

It's 1999 2.4 140bhp 195,000 miles

Cheers

As you have the non turbo engine why not take the ETM off the inlet manifold and clean it yourself, at least this way you will know it's been done.

10MM socket or spanner and a screwdriver is all thats needed to take it off and an aerosol of carb cleaner spray (typically £5), don't bother disconnecting it as the electrical lead as it is long enough to gain access to the inlet manifold side of the ETM. Whilst it is off check the colour of the label, white would show as the original, yellow is a replacement but even the yellow ones have the same crap internals that wear out given time - Mike

Jeeeez...if it's the original at 195k miles there's hope for me yet...LOL
Mine's "only" done 104k and still with the original ETM working fine right now.!
I have a look at mine about every 6/8 months and give it a clean...it never seems to get badly gunged up though.

Definitely original, we've had the car since it was a year old.

I'll give it a clean tomight - tbh I know you can clean the throttle body but didn't realise the ETM itself could be done.

You can clean the throttle valve and inlet tract but getting at the electrical bits that wear out isn't really a DIY job, if the throttle valve is gummed up then it can stick at idle making application of the throttle sluggish - worth a clean before getting it repaired - Mike

Thanks, Mike - just started to do that and then the clouds opened.
It's not too dirty - I squirt some carb cleaner through it each service so I guess that has kept it clean.

To clean it out properly it needs to be unbolted from the manifold as the crud builds up on the inlet side of the throttle valve/ butterfly, make sure both the valve and the inlet tract are spotless before refitting to the engine, there should be a small gap between the valve and the sides of the throttle valve, if this gets clagged up it can make the flap stick at the idle position when you apply the throttle - Mike

Can I suggest that you:

1) post your query in the right forum for your car
2) start a new thread instead of hijacking someone else's thread which is probably a different issue?

You'll get a much better response that way.

Cheers!

Mine seems to still be good after a clean and upgrade at 172k, it's now at 225k... it would probably be nearer 260k had I not gone to Aus for 2 yrs! Unfortunately the car is now BER so it's all getting broken. Just started it today to faff with some stuff and it's started first time!

Use decent fuel, V-Power or BP Ultimate every so often, and avoid some of the cheapo fuel and that seems to help. Mine tended to be run on Shell standard, and occasionally (if I was particularly skint) Morrisons or Asda.
